Carberry Collegiate's Peer Mentoring Program involves Grade 9-12 students who learn to listen to and help facilitate the growth and development of other students. Peer Mentors is a program for kids by kids. Peer mentors provide advice and support and serve as role models for others who need help. Challenges facing those being mentored include problems with schoolwork, social issues, such as pressure to drink or smoke, family problems or tension, and other typical difficulties of growing up.

Peer Mentors have been a positive influence in our school in providing a relaxed atmosphere where students can interact with each other.

Peer Mentor Mission Statement:

Peer Mentors will provide a safe environment where students are listened to in a confidential manner.  They will not only be approachable but will serve as positive role models for the student body.

GRADE 5 WELCOME
Oct.11/11

This event started with an explanation of what Peer mentors do. Next, each Peer mentor introduced him/herself. We ended by naming some of the qualities Peer mentors possess. After the formal part was complete, we headed to the gym for Octopus Tag and Crazy Baseball. We concluded with refreshments (cookies, cupcakes, and iced tea) provided by the Peer Mentors. Our hope is to make the Grade 5's feel more welcome as the newcomers to our school and to make them aware of our role within the school community. A good time was had by all!!

GRADE 6-8 INTRODUCTIONS

Oct.17/11

The Peer Mentors introduced themselves to the Grade 6-8 classes and explained their role in the school. In this way, students can become more familiar with the Peer Mentors themselves and understand in what situations they might need to contact a Peer Mentor.

BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK

Nov.14/11

The week of Nov.13-19 is Bullying Awareness Week. The Peer Mentors took a whole school approach and held a Grade 5-12 assembly to talk about bullying in our school. Sam McDonald introduced the topic of bullying and all the Peer Mentors came forward, wearing white t-shirts. On the front of each member's t-shirt was a derogatory comment that each had experienced. The Peer Mentors had prepared a video which was shown to the assembly and at the end of the video, the Peer Mentors went to the front of the gym but this time they showed the back of their t-shirts. On the back of each shirt was one of our slogans - Stand Up! Be the Change! The Grade 9-12's returned to class and the Grade 5-8's stayed in the gym to participate in "Cross the Line." This activity helps to show the students that they are not alone - we have all been bullied and we can all be bullies. But we can also be part of the change!

CHRISTMAS CHEER

For the month of December, Peer Mentors had classes getting money together - home rooms in Grades 5-8 and Period 1 classes in Grades 9-12. Each class was assigned a child - they were given the age and gender - and they had to use their money to shop for that child. Some classes were able to shop for two children because they had brought in enough money. All the gifts were gathered together on December 20 and taken to the Drop In Centre where Christmas Cheer was organizing the gift packs. It is a great opportunity for our students to give back to the community!!
